Chase-away sexual selection as noisy reliable signaling

Holland and Rice have proposed "a new model intersexual selection that is based on antagonistic coevolution between the sexes." The model is developed verbally and its relationship to other models may be unclear. I want to establish that the general processes involved, exaggeration and resistance, are fundamental to existing good-genes and direct-benefits models. I will refer to these aa reliable-signaling models. Then I will explore the possibility that what Holland and Rice are postulating is essentially adding noise to a reliable-signaling system. The hypothesis that some extravagant displays represent irrelevant noise is intriguing, but the underlying chase-away process is an elaboration on, rather than an exclusive alternative to, reliable signaling. It is noisy reliable signaling.
