This paper reports for the first time the anthocyanin and flavonol profiles of Rufete red grapes autochthonous from the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve "Las Sierras de Bejar y Francia". This would be useful not only for characterizing the phenolic composition of Rufete and for assessing its phenolic potential for wine production but also for chemotaxonomic purposes. The Hierarchical Cluster Analyses have revealed that the differences in the anthocyanin and flavonol profiles allow the separation between this autochthonous variety and Tempranillo, the red grape variety most grown in Spain. The anthocyanin composition may be used to differentiate among clones whereas it has not been possible with the flavonol profile, probably due to the greater variability in the levels among clones. The results obtained could be important for future breeding programmes.
