We thank the authors for their interest in our paper. The discussion that has resulted emphasises the current lack of a widely accepted superior method for ligating the renal vessels during laparoscopic nephrectomy. Such a technique could only be demonstrated by a prospective randomised trial. However, judging from the reported numbers of patients treated using the various techniques and the small numbers of vascular complications resulting from them, together with the fact that individual surgeons are likely to prefer and be more proficient at a particular technique based on their experience, it is doubtful whether such a trial could be usefully conducted.
