Words of wisdom. Re: androgen-deprivation therapy in prostate cancer and cardiovascular risk: a science advisory from the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and American Urological Association: endorsed by the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

The American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Urological Association commissioned this multidisciplinary writing group to evaluate the cardiovascular and metabolic effect of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in men with prostate cancer and to make patient management recommendations. A review of available data confirmed that ADT induces certain aspects of the metabolic syndrome and is associated with increase in fat mass, decrease in lean muscle, increased insulin resistance, adverse lipid profile, and higher rate of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Importantly, these changes were observed within the first 3 mo of treatments. Less convincing, although somewhat suggestive, was a link between ADT and cardiovascular events.
