Letter in response to Dearnaley et al. letter1 regarding paper: Evaluating the efficacy of statins and angiotensin converting enzyme-inhibitors in reducing gastrointestinal toxicity in patients receiving radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies2

We welcome these observations from a group which has published a veritable torrent of ground-breaking studies focusing not only on manipulating technical aspects of treatment (including dose distribution, escalation and fractionation) to improve oncological outcomes but also better measurement, assessment and thus prevention of toxicity, essential to improve the well-being of their increasing numbers of long term survivors.In their letter1 in response to our study Professor Dearnaley's group presents the results of an exploratory analysis into the possible relationship between hypertension and acute and late bowel and bladder toxicity in patients receiving radiotherapy for prostate cancer within the Conventional or Hypofractionated High dose Intensity modulated radiotherapy for Prostate cancer (CHHIP) study.
