摘要

The genetic modification debate rages on, two new proposals for regulating the traceability and labelling of genetically-modified (GM) products, and food and feed produced from them have been agreed by the European Council subject to the detailed texts being finalized. But are they realistic or will they, as many believe, simply create a new administrative and financial headache for an industry which has suffered more than its fair share of problems? Many EV member states have been calling for a more stringent and transparent labelling framework since 1998. Any food or food ingredients, including additives and flavourings which have been derived from a GM source and which contain detectable modified protein or DNA, have to state their GM origin onthe label, although a threshold of 1 percent exists for the accidental presence of GM materials. At present there are no labelling requirements for animal feed ingredients derived from genetically-modified organisms (GMOs).
