Those clever automotive analysts at Bernstein Research have gone to the trouble of working out in hard cash terms just which cars have made the biggest losses for their manufacturers (see News, 2 October). Most of the money-losing models are hardly surprising, but what we really want to know at this end of Autocar is which ones are worth buying. For a start, you wouldn't want a Jaguar X-type. Sorry if you've got one, but they're not that good. The fact that it has Ford bits is irrelevant; the X-type simply isn't what you expect a Jaguar to be. So spending the £3945 that each one lost is no guarantee that it will be worth having. A 2006 2.5 V6 with 62,000 miles may be the best value at £4495, but, really, it's not for me.
