Endless sunshine and world class resorts have helped turn Spain into a major holiday destination and, as a result, made tourism one of the country's key industries. But, nowadays, it's more than just a matter of people sitting on a beach, eating tapas or taking in the Barcelona sights. Health tourism is a multi-million euro business and, this year, the growing popularity of spa and associated treatments, notably due to the ageing population, has led to the creation of a new partnership between the health and tourist sectors. The Cluster Espanol de Turismo de Salud (Spanish Health Tourism Cluster) was launched in July to help take advantage of this potentially lucrative market, which brought more than 20,000 people to Spanish soil in 2012. The average health tourist spends more than the regular one, according to the Cluster's figures -in total, foreigners spent in excess of ?12m on "health" treatments last year.
