This time last year my husband, Steve, and I were in Malta enjoying two weeks' holiday in relative warmth. We met a really friendly, hospitable Maltese beekeeper called Ray and he showed us the Roman stone apiaries that have been in the north of the island for over two thousand years. He took us all around his apiaries, and we really got a flavour of Maltese beekeeping - seeing parts of the island that would have escaped us completely had we just stuck to the tourist areas. We have kept in touch withRay and have met up with him a couple of times in England when he has come over for the Spring Convention and to take his Basic Beekeeping exam with the BBKA. This week, Ray contacted me to say that he is planning to expand his commercial beekeeping business and would appreciate a hand from an experienced beekeeper. It would be a 'working holiday', probably in May, whereby Ray would provide accommodation in return for a few hours of beekeeping a day. It would suit a husband and wife or pair of friendsas, when the beekeeping is finished, you could go off and explore the island together.
