Iam a new beekeeper and beginning to understand why it is called a craft! I came in to beekeeping because of the publicity about the loss of the honey bee and with an aim to provide sustainable beekeeping. By this I mean I am not in it just for the honey! Having built a top bar hive (TBH) which I found difficult to manage Terry the Bee' (Saltash) suggested a 16x10 Darlington hive. The great beauty about this hive is that commercial brood frames can be used making inspections much simpler than a TBH.The floor is open mesh for ventilation and similar in many respects to a TBH. I have been experimenting with entrances and noticing how this changes the lay pattern within the hive.
