Are consumers clamoring for food labeling that tells them whether a tomato was picked by a farm worker or a machine? Or whether their beet was fermented by Saccharomyces , cerevisiae or Saccharomyces uvaruml? Not likely. But a few self-styled consumer groups are demanding what amounts to the same thing for foods made with biotechnology. Researchers, food producers, and consumers alike will lose if these groups get their way.
