摘要

When Connie Greig was thrown into the BSE (bovine spongi-form encephalopathy) controversy earlier this year, she was prepared. She's always prepared. For at least a year, she and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCSA) had been tracking theBritish "mad cow disease" and now its suspected link to CJD (Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease) in humans. CJD is a rare, fatal brain disease that occurs worldwide among vegetarians as well as meat-eaters. Her connection to CJD, however, has a more personal impact. About a year ago, a cousin died of the affliction. That first-hand experience has made her approach to BSE as chairman of NCSA's Cattle Health and Well-being Committee more thorough and objective.
