Outstanding role of L.I.Prasolov in the development of geography and cartography of soils in the 20th century (on the 125th anniversary of his birth)

The article outlines the life and achievements of L.I.Prasolov, an internationally recognized pedologist. Principal attention is devoted to his soil survey works in the middle Volga basin, Siberia, and Turkmenia, and to the soil map of the world, which he compiled. The outstanding role of Prasolov in organizing institutions of soil science and in applying soil maps for practical purposes, particularly, for calculating global and regional soil resources, is acknowledged.
