While recent figures released by the Peruvian Exporter's Association have suggested that demand is growing in Europe for the country's sweet onions, there is still a long way to go before the products are firmly established as a mainstream product across the continent."Europe is still learning what a sweet onion is, and is still finding out the pleasure of eating a raw onion without being bothered by an extreme, hot flavour, aftertaste and unpleasant digestion," says Miguel Ognio, general director of exporter KeyPeruSA and chairman of Adex onion sub-committee. There is certainly plenty of interest in the sweeter varieties, however, boosted by a shortfall in availability elsewhere this year.
