Tasmania's cherry sector is described by some in the industry as a young trade, but the only green behind ears in Tasmania is the reflection of healthy growth. With new fumigation-free access to the cherry-keen Japanese market, promising opportunitiesin North America and a solid reputation in Europe, it isn't behaving like the usual awkward teenager. The state's confident handling of its cherry export is in part due to more than a century's experience with apples, which the director of cherry exporter Top Qual Chris Knapek says has given the industry a solid foundation. "In general our growers have grown up in an export culture with apples, and following on with cherries we have a pretty good basis to build on there," he explains.
