On December 30, 2003, Professor Dmitrii Sergeevich Orlov, the Head of the Department of Soil Chemistry at Moscow State University, celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday. Orlov was born in Moscow into the family of an engineer. In 1947, he left school and became a student of the Faculty of Chemistry, Moscow State University. In the same year, he was transferred to the Faculty of Geology and Soil Science and joined a group of students specializing in soil science and soil mechanics. Since then, Orlov's entire life has been connected with soil chemistry at Moscow State University. In his student years, Orlov worked in the laboratory of soil erosion of the Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute and took part in the soil-botanical expedition of the Botanical Garden (USSR Academy of Sciences) in the mountains of Tallaskii Ala-Tau (Kazakhstan, Chimkent region).
