The choice of diagnostic criteria allowing us to judge the degree of development of vertic properties in soils is discussed.The Russian term "slitogenesis" (vertigenesis) is applied to denote this process.Essential features of vertigenesis and their diagnostic indices are desdcribed in detail.A scheme to evaluate the degree of vertigenesis is suggested.
