Crisis stalks Ecuador's banana business

Guayaquil-A contraction in demand and resulting poor prices on the global market have prompted the Ecuadorean government to declare a state of emergency and put together a multi-million-dollar aid package. Ecuador's government is helping claw back thecountry's banana industry from a deepening crisis resulting from a price crash on the international market which has left exporters only able to pay producers up to US$2 per box of fruit, well below the official price of US$5.50 stipulated under the country's new banana law.
