The effectiveness of phytoextraction of contaminants from soil is proportional to the product of the coefficient of element accumulation by plants (crops) and the crop yield. The period of soil half-purification may vary from several years to hundredsof thousands of years depending on the properties of soil, plants, and contaminants. An important parameter affecting soil purification by crops is the coefficient of distribution of a given contaminant between the solid and liquid soil phases. The rateof soil purification can be calculated on the basis of data on the coefficient of accumulation of a contaminant in plants, crop yield, soil mass (per ha), distribution of the element between the solid and liquid soil phases, and the intensity of precipitation in the polluted area.
