摘要

THE European cold chain distribution process is inherently complex with its multiple handoffs; trying to transport fresh fruit and vegetables in controlled temperatures from a farm to a warehouse to a distribution centre to a retail store via refrigerated trailers, trains and cargo vessels, Alas, mishandling becomes a part of the process. According to a recent report about shrinkage in the European retail sector by the University of Leicester and the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) Europe organisation, 54 per cent of retailers believe that known losses are due to process failures. The report, Shrinkage in Europe: A Survey of Stock Loss in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods Sector, 2004, also states that 7 per cent of loss is thought to occur at retail distribution centres or while goods are in transit. This equates to a 1.2 EUR bn problem.
