Cobana puts pineapples at heart of plans for 2006: The company expects per capita consumption to rise as consumers discover the delights of the sweet fruit, a spokesman tells Eurofruit Magazine
HOW many tonnes of pineapples will you import in 2006? How do these volumes compare to last year? This year, we have put pineapples very much at the heart of our procurement and marketing activities. As a result, we expect to double the volumes of pineapples we will handle to between 40,000 and 45,000 tonnes. The vast majority - over 90 per cent in fact - will be MD2, which reflects the current dominance of this variety on the European pineapple market. We work with a number of suppliers in Costa Rica and Ecuador, whom we have selected based on the quality and consistency of their supplies. The logistical synergies we have been able to create through combined shipments of bananas and pineapples from these sources have played an important role in improving our competitiveness on the pineapple market. The remaining volume is comprised solely of the classic Smooth Cayenne, which we source from our suppliers in Africa.
