Mining in Australia - Part 1: Metal Ore Mining in South Australia and Tasmania

The so far longest excursion of the Institut for Mining of the Clausthal University last year led scientists and students to Australia. The three-week trip covered open pit and underground mines, processing plants and refineries as well as universities and research centres in the states of South Australia, Tasmania and New South Wales. A total of eighteen facilities were visited. The visits in South Australia and Tasmania focussed on metal ore mining, whereas in New South Wales the emphasis was put on the coal industry with effective open pits, underground operations and the port at Newcastle. The outcome of the journey is available in the form of a printed report and for the first time also on CD-ROM supporting multimedia features. ERZMETALL will now publish a series of three articles featuring selected results of the field trip.
