Gas storage facilities are often automated in a quite simple manner. The properties of the reservoirs can be taken into account however in the surface procedures with modern automation equipment. These local automation concepts have then to be sensibly integrated into the overall control concept. This paper shows how at the natural gas storage plant of the Berliner Gaswerke AG the gas withdrawal operation has been improved, when the control of the withdrawal control concept. Flow measurement and control values have been mounted at each well head in order to influence the velocity of the gas. These flow controls did not cooperate properly with the fow control circuits at the main withdrawal control values. The withdrawal control concept therefore has been changed to influence the plant pressure instead.
