OMV Austria Exploration and Production GmbH operates approximately 550 sucker rod pumps in its Matzen oilfield.These wells are responsible for about two thirds of the total Austrian oil production.The path of automation that began in the mid 90s has now reached this artificial lift system.In 2002 the project Oil Well Automation was initiated,which carried the idea of a fully controllable oil field to the wells.This idea had already proven its worth in the treatment stations where it resulted in a considerable reduction of operating and maintenance costs.The main focus of the first studies for automation was set on a secure operation,which is combined with an efficient monitoring.The project was divided into three technical parts.The measurement devices at the pumping jack,the data transmission and the implementation into the existing production control system were each evaluated and resulted in a concept of execution.
