The Description of a New Fossil Species of Blackflies, Ectemnia lithuanica Jankovskij et Bernotiene, sp. n. (Diptera, Simuliidae),from the Baltic Amber

A new fossil species of blackflies is described. The female of this species is included into a piece of the Baltic amber the age 350 mln. years, Eocene-Oligocene. According to the characters accessible to examination, this specimen belongs to the subfamily Prosimuliinae End. katepisternum extended dorsoventrally. tribe Ec-temniini End. costal vein bearing both hairs and spinules, calcipala on hind leg absent, and claw with large basal tooth, genus Ectemnia End. pedisulcus on hind leg absent,body very large, 5.5 mm long; 1.5-2.5 mm in specimens of other genera. This specimen is described as Ectemnia lithuanica Yankovsky et Bernotiene, sp. n. This is only the 6th species of blackflies described from amber. The new species clearly differs from the closely related Ectemnia cerberus Enderlein, 1921 also from the Baltic amber in the extraordinarily long wings nearly twice as long as the body and very small head as compared to the body size.
