The most common type of surge protector contains a metal oxide varistor - more commonly known as an MOV. Even surge protection devices suffer from the damage continual surges cause and so it is important to select a device that either allows for replaceable MOVs or has more than one in its protection circuit. In general, though, most good surge protection devices will feature an indicator light so that the surge device can be replaced should the protection circuit no longer function. At the high end of the surge protection market Silicon Avalanche devices provide the best protection. The best, however, comes at a premium.
