Springtail (Collembola) Community of a Waste Dump in Moscow Oblast

Forty species of springtails have been found in the Saburovo waste dump (Moscow oblast). Species of tropical origin (Xenylla welchi, Desoria trispinata, and Cryptopygus thermophilus) are dominant. Southern steppe and Mediterranean species have also been revealed. Litter-dwelling species dominate, with soil and surface-dwelling forms being scarce. Springtails form dense aggregations distributed in a mosaic pattern. Drastic seasonal fluctuations in springtail abundance, with peaks in late summer and early autumn, have been registered. The species diversity of springtails increases at the final stages of waste decomposition, and their abundance reaches the highest values at intermediate stages.
