Screening of Maize Inbred Lines Against Selected Isolates of Exserohilum turcicum, the Causal Agent of Turecicum Leaf Blight in Maize

A total of 32 inbred lines were screened for E. turcicum in polyhouse condition (temperature 20 C, 85% RH> with four representative isolates namely Hyderabad (Race 1), Kolhapur (Race 2), Jashipur (Race 3) and Nagenahalli (Race 4). It was observed that the inbred lines viz., NAI-115, 116, 135, 141, 142, CM-114 and CM-205 were resistant to all four races, while NAI-110 and NAI-126 were showing resistant against Race 1 (Hyderabad isolate), Race 2 (Kolhapur isolate) and Race 3 (Joshipur isolate) and susceptible reaction against Race 4 (Nagenahalli isolate). Race 1 (Hyderabad isolate) gave the least disease rating values during various observations. This race could not produce any symptom on seven genotypes namely NAI-115, 116, 135, 141, 142, CM-114 and CM-205 after day 8 of inoculation. It was emphasized that these seven genotypes may hold promise for excellent resistance against all the proposed four races observed during the investigation. The CM-202 line was observed to be highly susceptible to various proposed races observed during the study.
