Effect of different plant density and weed management on yield of rice in Bihar.

An experiment was conducted during the kharif season on 2008-09 and 2009-10. Among the three tested plant density, spacing 15*15 cm was found to be superior over 20*1.5 cm and 20*20 cm in respect of panicle/m 2. Whereas, length of panicle was recorded highest in spacing 20*20 cm. Statistical analysis revealed that spacing 15*15 cm showed superiority over 20*15 cm and 20*20 cm in respect of grain and straw yield and grain:straw ratio but influence of population density on HI was found to be non-significant. The treatment weedy check (no weeding) recorded poor yield attributing characters, yield and economics. Amongst various weed control measures, hand weeding and chemical weedicides recorded significantly higher tillers/m 2, grain and straw yield and harvest index than weedy check treatment with at par response among themselves. Hence, plant geometry of 15*15 cm as well as adoption of chemical weed-control methods is recommendable in early duration rice crop production in mid upland situation of Bihar.
