Performance of Black Bengal goat on deep litter system of management under humid tropical condition of West Bengal.

This study was conducted to determine the litter condition, growth, disease susceptibility and other physiological responses in goats associated with deep litter housing. The productive and reproductive performances of the goats were also investigated. 30 Black Bengal kids aged 4-5 months and weighing 5-6 kg were housed on deep litter for a period of 2 years under humid tropics with Para grass and concentrate feed block. The moisture and nitrogen contents of the litter increased with time and body mass without having any apparent adverse effect on health. Haematological parameters were within normal limits. Goats reproduced throughout the year, indicating unaltered reproductive pattern due to confinement on deep litter. The growth and feed efficiency were optimum. It was concluded that Black Bengal goats could be reared under confinement in deep litter..
