A field experiment was conducted during kharif (monsoon period) 1995 at Kapurthala (Punjab, India) to study the effect on paddy yield when planted manually or with a paddy transplanter. Using the paddy transplanter produced higher grain yield, higher number of seedlings per m2, increased economic return, and reduced labour requirement, compared to paddy transplanting using hired labour. Transplanting by paddy transplanter in fields prepared using a puddling roller helped minimize infiltration losses, and maintained the ecological soil water balance.
