The United Nations General Assembly closed its fifty-eighth substantive session on 13 September 2004. The outgoing President, Julian Robert Hunte (St Lucia), praised the Organisation's genuine drive to overcome the crisis of confidence that had gripped the United Nations in the wake of the war in Iraq. He highlighted the progress made on such issues as sustainable development, revitalising the Assembly's work and reform of the Security Council -the latter item having been on its agenda without comprehensive resolution for ten years.
