In the case presented in Fig. 13d, suction distribution of whole column changed significantly after 1-hour rainfall, and the suction in the upper and lower regions decreased more than the middle regions. Flow always occurs from the regions of high to low total hydraulic head, h (Freeze and Cherry, 1979). The equation for the total hydraulic head can be expressed as follows: h = z + ψ.
