The environmental conditions at hot strip mills are unfavorable for measuring technique. Usually conventional methods for characterizing product parameters fail due to these measurement conditions. In the last years however it has been proved that optical measurement technique is a useful alternative. One most influential parameter at hot strip mills is the geometric dimension of the transfer bar. During the reduction of thickness of the stock in several reversing passes a deviation of the straightness (camber) of the strip can occur. Such a distortion can (will) cause disturbances at the following steps of production (mainly at the finishing mill).
