Some general observations on refractories for Ironmaking and Steelmaking

World steelmaking has crossed the twelve hundred million tonne mark. BOF and EAF are virtually the only two methods of steel production today. By 2010, both processes will have equal shares. The refractory industry must gear itself to satisfy steel producers using both routes. EAFs use water cooled panels trend may be applied to BOFs as well. Refractory industry is likely to face difficult times in future without a proper strategy. More attention will need to be paid on cost of energy and meeting environmental norms. Partnership between Steelmakers and Refractory Manufacturers with stake of the latter in the steel business can be a long-term solution.
