India, it can be stated truthfully, is a country of paradoxes. A young friend of mine put it rather unkindly us a nation of 'democratic anarchy'. Today, we have excellent IT professionals, rocket scientists, electronic and other engineers, a space program that many developed nations envy, globally respected educational institutions such as the IITs and IIMs, print and electronic media that match the best in the world, modern factories for automobiles, television, washing machines and other consumer goodies set up by leading global brands, a booming Sensex that seemingly keeps climbing and no one dares to predict the "peak", an ever increasing foreign exchange reserve, a growth rate that is consistently hovering around the 8 percent level - allowing one to talk of even a level of 10-12 percent in the near future and much more.
