In the single-belt process (also called direct strip casting (DSC process)), liquid steel is fed from the supply system onto a moving belt made from steel or copper sheet, which is cooled from below by water emerging from nozzles located in the cooling chamber 'Thick strip" is produced with thickness between 10 and 15 mm. Compared to the twin-roll process, the development has not yet led to production scale installations. Table I provides data from the known casters. The most advanced is that of Clausthal Technical University; operated in cooperation with Salzgitter AG, SMS Demag AG and Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG. This caster (Clausthal II in Table I) is connected to a duo for in-line hot rolling. A sketch of the installation is shown in Figure 1. Clausthal has demonstrated that casting and hot rolling can be coupled without major difficulties.
