This paper outlines the development of a modern mill control system for a new rolling process. The general requirement was straightforward: convert a large-diameter ingot into 4- to 5-inch round billets. Advanced technologies and emphasis on a high degree of automation were used to complete the project and give the client a reliable, easy-to-use and competitive process. An important requirement of the client was to have complete control of all mill equipment, including a 2-hi reversing mill stand, four independent motion side-guides, bar flipper, bar turner and screwdowns to adjust mill roll gap by a single operator. To accomplish this, each part of the process was grouped into a manageable set of operator controls, while increasing the automation of each area to hands-free or nearly hands-free operadon.
