Stirring of liquid steel in a steel ladle using an inert gas is an important part of the steel conditioning process. The dynamics between molten metal, the slag layer above the metal and the injected stirring gas are of significant interest during this process. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling was performed to simulate the dynamics between the different fluid components in a steel ladle. A three-dimensional, multi-phase model was used to generate the mixing patterns resulting from gas injection from various plug pair locations.
