ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor No. 2 Steel Producing (No. 2 SP) has two 195-tonne basic oxygen furnaces (BOFs). Each one of the BOFs has its own dedicated suppressed offgas combustion system for capturing and cleaning the offgases, followed by a dedicated stack for burning the offgases. Since 2001, these furnaces operated without a comprehensive offgas analysis. The only offgas (OG) safety control was an oxygen analyzer at the stack. This arrangement leaves substantial room for error, as explosive conditions can occur in various combinations of CO/O_2/H_2 in different stages of the BOF process. In 2008, No. 2 SP management received the capital expenditure approval to install a comprehensive gas analysis unit for both BOFs.
