The refractory performance of ladles in any high-productivity meltshop is as important as the performance of any other production unit to ensure overall meltshop performance. Predictable and consistent ladle refractory wear will not disrupt production. However, the opposite is true when there is a step-change in the performance of ladle refractory bricks (barrel or slagline). The ladle refractory performance at Nucor Steel-Indiana (Nucor Crawfordsville) during 2006 and the first half of 2007 was fairly consistent, and a ladle reline occurred approximately after every 50 heats. During a ladle reline, both the barrel and slagline refractory bricks are replaced.
