Cold rolled coils/sheets constitute nearly 10-12% of finished steel (non-alloy) and such cold rolling mills in integrated steel plants consume larger pie of grease as maintenance lubricants. Also, with technological advancement and keeping enhanced productivity in mind, these mills are operated at a high speed. Besides, roll neck bearings are subjected to ingress of water and coolant, optimal performance of any grease largely depends on its ability to withstand or repel water contaminants so that it is not washed away from application point. Traditionally, simple lithium soap or lithium complex or aluminium complex based grease is recommended for use in most steel plants for lubrication of cold rolling mill bearings. Further, lithium complex is most common type of grease being used today with certain limitations in its performance in an environment where high speed, load and contamination with huge quantity of water/coolant are unavoidable. This leads to excessive consumption, bearing failure and production loss due to maintenance downtime. Hence, formulation of grease for such aggressive application environment is very critical and always remained a great challenge to the designers or manufacturers of such lubricants. Balmer Lawrie has created a lubrication solution to address said problems generally encountered in major steel plant.
