No. 5 coking plant, one of the oldest coking plants in Japan, at Chiba Works in Kawasaki Steel has been operated since 1964. Although average lifetime of coking plant is approximately 30 years No. 5 coking plant has to be in operation for more than 40 years due to the need to ensure continuous supplies of coke and coke-oven gas.One of the factors for, the life is the degree of damage of coke-oven walls, flame gunning is one of the most efficient techniques for repairing the walls, Kawasaki Steel developed original flame gunning repair system for coke-oven walls (the Kawatetsu flame gunning (K-FG) in 1986.Gunning material flow rate waslimited to less than 30 kg/h. Since No. 5 coking plant has been in operation for 35 years, larger capacity of gunning material was required. Therefore, large capacity flame gunning system has recently been developed.Following major features are described in this paper:·Developed burner for large capacity flame gunning·Characteristics of the improved flame gunned layer·Reduction of thermal shock damage of coke-oven walls by the flame gunning.
