National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is-planning to set up a low pig iron plant using Russian technology. NMDC has identified Rome It technology by which the delisted material would become the raw material for the production of low phos pig iron. For the purpose, the corporation plans to promote an independent company, NMDC Iron & Steel Plant (NISP). The plant, with an installed capacity of 0.30 million tonne, would come up at Geedam, in Chattisgarh, according to NMDC chairman and managing director, P R. Tripathi. NMDC has already entered into an agreement with Romelt Sail Ltd. And AMET Ltd of Russia, for basic engineering and grant of sub-licence for setting up of Romelt Pig Iron Plant. Environmental clearance for the project has been obtained while the required land augmented by the state government.
