In 1980, the two authors, at that time young professors of physics (both Germans, but one teaching in the US), published Energie: Ein Lehrbuch der Physikalischen Grundlagen whose second edition, in 1984, came to 616 pages. Nearly 30 years later the authors, both retired but still teaching, revisited this vast topic in a shorter (433 pages of text) but similarly comprehensive volume intended to be used as a textbook for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students and, at least in part, for general readers with some technical background. That is a fair assessment— but only if one assumes standards of understanding that have become the exception rather than the norm in the university education in English-speaking countries, whose quality has been steadily diluted by the flight toward the lowest common denominator.
