Japan's JBIC Broadens Scope of Lending

Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has flagged closer, more diversified ties with countries in the Middle East and likely funding for LNG projects in Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) as part of its post-credit crisis financing strategy. The government-funded bank will also increasingly focus on deals involving the acquisition of, or access to, existing resources rather than the longer-dated exploration ventures typical of previous years, Tadashi Maeda, chief of staff, told EI Finance in a recent interview. The bank's loans strategy will no longer be directed solely to projects aimed at bringing more oil arid gas into Japan, he added.
