If further evidence ot the parlous state of European refining were needed, it came this month with the closure of two more refineries in Europe — one permanent, the 55,000 barrel per day Mantova plant in Italy, and the other temporary, the 210,000 b/d Grangemouth refinery and petrochemical facility in the UK. Hungary's Mol blamed sustained economic pressure on the Italian refining industry for its decision to convert the Mantova oil refinery into an oil products hub, while an industrial dispute forced global chemicals giant Ineos to briefly close Grangemouth.
