The recent Alcoa announcement that the Port Henry Aluminium smelter, located near Geelong in Victoria, would close at the end of 2014 is a major blow to the Australian aluminium and electricity industries. While the direct impacts on the Port Henry staff and the business of Geelong will be devastating, the flow on effects will be felt across the country. This closure comes hot on the heels of the closure of the Kurri Kurri Aluminium Smelter in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales in 2012.
