A number of coker disruptions have hit the US Gulf coast over the past week, threatening to further tighten petroleum coke supply already cut by planned maintenance and weak refining margins. Two Texas Gulf cokers — one at LyondellBasell’s 268,000 b/d refinery in Houston and the other at Citgo’s 200,000 b/d refinery in Corpus Christi — had to be shut down last week, the former after a fire and the latter because of what appeared to be a ruptured tube on a coker heater. In the midcontinent, Phillips 66’s 356,000 b/d Wood River joint venture refinery in Roxana, Illinois, was running at reduced rates because of a shutdown on a pipeline supplying it with heavy Canadian crude.
