It is a fact that Class 1 timber hardwoods are extremely hard to obtain due to the continued demand from utilities right across Australia to support their large networks. The typical life of a hardwood pole has been calculated to be in the 55 year bracket with most of these poles being installed over the 20 year period since World War II. During the past 15 years or so, we have seen the introduction of the 'green' pole which predominantly is of the black butt or spotted gum variety. These poles do not have the durability of the hardwoods and consequently face a shorter life prediction. Experts predict a reduction in pole longevity of between 10 and 15 years compared with the ironbarks and grey gums etc.
